Freedom from Torture

Don’t miss Freedom from Torture’s art week, which is on until the 28th November. Nick went along last night to see the ‘Thirty-Six Pounds’ exhibition at the Open Art Studio, 91 Brick Lane.

We recently framed some pieces for the exhibition so it was a great excuse to see his framing and the artwork in action, which both really came together to create a very moving and emotional event. Freedom from torture event

Sane – Black Dog campaign

The mental health charity Sane have launched a nationwide ‘Black Dog’ campaign to raise awareness of mental health and challenge negative stigmas. Look out around London for the black dog statues and read their Com2 designed press release for more information – Black Dog campaign brochure

Final harvest of the Summer

At the start of November Urban Growth did the final harvest of their summer season with sweet corn, potatoes, beets, cabbages, lettuces, cucumbers, squash and tomatoes being sold at the People’s Supermarket in Holborn.

Urban Quiet – the online urban spirituality centre

As well as working hard on rebranding our own websites, Com2 Web design has also recently completed urbanquiet.org, a new website promoting urban spirituality, and are currently working towards launching not one, not three, but two websites designed to offer support for people with learning difficulties. Com2 Picture Framing are really proud of a recent project framing over 40 photographs for The ‘Garden Route Children’s Trust’ a British Charity helping children in one of the poorest areas in South Africa. Recent progress from Urban Growth

Urban Growth (UG) has sown/planted our overwintering vegetables and soft fruits at both the Elm Village and St Michaels growing/training sites. We have broad beans, cabbage, kales, onions, garlic, etc. Most of our frost protection structures have also been built.

Work preparing our site for a fruit orchard is close to completion, and should be planted by Jan/Feb – apples, pears, plums, cherries, kiwi, passion fruit, etc.

We have planted this week the slope along the stairway to the garden with various bulbs – daffodils, snowdrops, tulips, lily, etc. This is UG’s first attempt at ornamental horticulture and we are eager to see if our planting scheme (informal, not over-done, but inviting) works. Unfortunately, we have to wait until Feb/Mar for the bulbs to burst into bloom.
Anyhow, UG wishes you and yours a happy holidays and a productive new year.

Volunteering Works!

Volunteering Works is a new Voluntary Placement programme at Jobs in Mind.

Over the last few months we have taken on over a dozen volunteers with various skills and experience to assist throughout all the programmes we run at Jobs in Mind (including Graphic Design & Print, Horticulture/Gardening, Marketing, Group Facilitation, Administration, Web Design and many more)

We are also in the midst of setting up a Job Retention Helpline Advice service that’s run 100% by volunteers!

Our recruitment is ongoing; we still have some placements available and new roles are being added too, so if you have time to spare and would like to get involved, please contact the Volunteer Co-ordinator for an information pack today!
